Tokyo Day 3
Full gallery of pics is here. Today we check out our office for working remotely, and then head off to the famous Hanami (cherry blossom) festival in Ueno for utter chaos!
Hot and spicy noodles down the street from our hostel. They’re so good, we all ordered them this time.
You won’t believe this. A fishing park in the middle of the city. They stock it with fish, and you pay to sit and fish in the middle of metropolitan Tokyo. I’m not sure if you actually get to take home what you catch, or if you have to just toss it back.
I LOVE these machines. You insert your money, pick your meal, and give the ticket to the people inside. I believe this comes from the buddhist concept of handling money being “unclean”. No one inside ever has to touch cash. And there’s no tipping in Japan, which is wonderful.
For some reason Japan is obsessed with Krispy Kreme. Every single franchise has a line like this in the front. This is the Shinjuku Krispy Kreme.
They even have a game room with a bamboo floor! Of course, I’ve never seen it in use. It’s probably completely decorative. Japanese would feel too weird about gaming during the day while their coworkers are toiling.
Ah, Ueno. We’re here for Hanami. Look at those mountains of trash! The Japanese do not mess around when they’re out drinking. They’d been at it for HOURS by the time we arrive.
This is what the parties look like. Tarps covered with beer, coworkers being forced to dress in maid outfits, everyone drunk as hell and having a blast.
Here’s what everyone is theoretically here for. No one seemed to be looking at them but me. Nice cherry blossoms.
Madness ? THIS IS .. HANABI CELEBRATION B*TCHES !!
The theme troughout your Japanese trip seems to be highly focused on Alcohol and food.
Can’t blame you tough
Your hunch about the cabbage + Pancakes being Okonoyami is correct.
To be exact, that’s the Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki.
Characterised by its thin crêpe-like dough and lots of shredded cabbage and sprouts, the Hiroshima-style pancake, unlike the Osaka-style pancake which you have had before, has multiple layers of toppings. Cabbage and other ingredients are piled up on top of crispy wafer thin pancake. Add a layer of fried noodles on top of this tower and place a fried egg atop the mountain. Spread the sauce with a brush and garnish it with dried parsley-like seaweed flakes.
Glad to see Amsterdam is being represented in my absence by random Hostel people.
If you need any crazy/random Dutch sentences to use against them, hit me up an e-mail with what you need to know in Dutch *LOL*
hanabi != hanami
Yeah, I was going to say – hanabi is fireworks…
I was in ATL airport around Christmas, and they’ve actually got happy food machines out front of their Burger King stands. You punch in what you want, pay your moeny, then give the receipt to the woman standing and looking bored behind the counter. -That’s- a work load.
The food looks pretty incredible. Any taiko at the festival?
Thanks for blogging all of this Tobin, very interesting to see what Japan is like. Are you recording any videos?
I’m a big fan of NoobToob, been watching for around 3 months now
Take care and enjoy your time in Japan!
