I'm outta here
I'm heading out tomorrow morning for 10 days in Japan. I'm supposed to be asleep by now but I'm excited, and I have insomnia. As usual. I'll just be exhausted for the 10 hour flight, which lands 28 hours after I take off. Go chew on that one for a while. But hey, coming back I get to land 8 hours before I take off.
I've got the camera all packed, and I'll return with lots of pictures of me stomping around like Whitezilla. I'm thinking I need to recreate the "Intergalactic" video by the Beastie Boys in a Tokyo train station.
Also, the Xbox 36o store opened yesterday. So I'll be swarming that joint with the hordes of otaku.
I warn you now that there may be incoherent rants from internet cafes.

I certainly hope so!
ah geez, Tobin, somehow I totally missed you were doing this.
problem is, I don't know what to advise you to do. my trips to Japan largely involve seeing baseball games, playing video games, shopping, and seeing wacky tourist shit. I don't think we'd have the same tastes in stuff overall.
I think though, that in Tokyo, you'd most enjoy the neighborhoods of Akihabara (duh, though honestly there's not much THERE aside from electronic stores), Shinjuku, and Shibuya. just take the Yamanote line to the appropriate JR station, get off, and wander. no joke. If you want a good view of the city, go up the Metropolitan Building in Shinjuku, it's free and has a better view than the Tokyo Tower, which'll cost you like 15 bucks. The Imperial Palace in Tokyo is laaaaame. If you like Hayao Miyazaki's movies, I totally totally recommend going out to Mitaka and taking in the Ghibli Museum, it's really rad. Oh, you might enjoy Ueno as a neighborhood as well. It's got a great park, a zoo, some fun shopping spots, and the best tempura I ever had in my life was there.
Do you know *where* in Tokyo you're staying? I usually stay in Ikebukuro, so my adventures are often based out of there. Fun place to hang out but not necessarily worth your time if you're just doing a crash tour of the city.
Also, for super-cheap CDs and games and books, go to Book-Off. It's a big used book store chain. I tend to find CDs for like Y250 there. awesome stuff.
Deanna, I don:t have your email. So if you:re reading this, tell me where the fun places to play video games are here in Tokyo. I:m staying in Asakusa, and I haven:t been able to find an arcade yet, just lots of pachenko.
