fierce, terrifying gays
I keep hearing these criticisms of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Will and Grace as having portrayals of "nonthreatening" gays. What do you want, threatening, scary gays on television?
I'm being facetious of course, I understand what they want, an honesty about the lifestyle, gays who aren't limp-wristed tarts who only care about clothes and scream like girls. But come on. Look at the rest of network television.
Do you remember anyone holding any sort of political opinion on Friends? Was Seinfeld really pushing any barriers? Are there any threatening characters on ANY mainstream television show? If there were, it wouldn't be mainstream, because it would offend people.
Most of mainstream humor is unthreatening dreck. If it IS threatening, they cancel it (Family Guy, for example). I just don't understand why the gay community focuses on shows like Queer Eye, as if gays are somehow being singled out and oppressed. They're not, they're being included in the lukewarm, simple minded mainstream. Welcome to the club.
